Irvington Drug Suspect Arrested in Newark

Newark

A drug suspect from Irvington was arraigned today on multiple drug charges following his arrest in Newark’s North Ward last night by Essex County sheriff’s detectives.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that in response to numerous neighborhood complaints of open-air drug trafficking in the area of Parker Street and Park Avenue detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics conducted a plainclothes surveillance operation at that location on Tuesday evening.

“Once on the scene, our BON detectives observed Terrell Bivins, 35, loitering in front of 143 Parker Street,” Sheriff Fontoura said. “Bivins was soon engaged in conversation with a male passerby, later identified as Jose Perez, 46 of Newark.”

Bivins then walked down the alleyway of the residence and removed items from a sandwich bag that was secreted under a wooded board that was lying on the ground.

“Bivins exchanged the items for cash,” Fontoura noted. “Perez was followed from the scene and was found to be in possession of four vials of ‘crack’ cocaine. Back at the Parker Street address Bivins was detained while our BON detectives searched the alleyway.”

The plastic bag, containing an additional forty vials of ‘crack’ cocaine, was discovered and Bivins was placed under arrest.

Bivins was charged with the sale of a controlled dangerous substance, the sale of CDS within 1000 feet of Barringer High School, the sale of CDS within 500 feet of Branch Brook Park, possession of CDS, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of Barringer High School and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of Branch Brook Park.

At today’s arraignment, bail on Bivins was set at $75,000 cash bond only and he was lodged at the county jail.

Perez was issued a summons for possession of CDS and released on his own recognizance. He will be arraigned at a later date.
