A New York man has been charged with attempting to buy gift cards using a fraudulent credit card at a Staples in Linden, according to police.
Police responded to the Staples store, located at 653 W. Edgar Road, in the Aviation Plaza mall, Wednesday shortly before 7:30 p.m. on a report of two men attempting to make a purchase with a fraudulent credit card.
Upon arrival, officers arrived at the scene as the two men were seen leaving the store.
After observing arriving officers, both men ran into the parking lot and split in two directions police said.
A backup unit chased one of the men towards South Stiles Street near the Burger King but lost sight of him.
The second suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Ryan Lincoln Joseph Garvey, of Rosedale, New York, was apprehended in the parking lot by another officer.
The store employee told officers that the men were attempting to purchase two gift cards with a VISA Citi Bank card which had a fake account number. When they were questioned.
The pair began to walk towards the exit leaving the card and a New York driver license behind.
Garvey was charged with fraudulent use of a credit card and resisting arrest by fleeing police. He was released on a summons pending a March 30th court date.
The second suspect remains at large.
