A NJ State Trooper has succumb to injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle in Deptford Township on Monday evening.
According to the State Police website, a spokesperson released this message at around 6 a.m.:
"The New Jersey State Police family is mourning the death of one of our troopers who died overnight from injuries sustained in the line of duty".
According to the spokes person, at around 8:15 p.m. Monday, Trooper Sean Cullen, 31, had responded to the scene of a crash on southbound 295, milepost 23.4 in Deptford Township. Tpr. Cullen was walking near that crash where there was an active car fire and several fire and police vehicles with emergency lights on when a vehicle struck him as it was passing the scene.
The 22 year old woman who was driving stopped immediately. She cooperated with State Police investigators. The spokesperson said Trooper Cullen sustained severe injuries to his head and was airlifted to Cooper hospital in Camden.
His family members and numerous troopers and law enforcement personnel from several different agencies held vigil late into the night at the hospital. Doctors pronounced him deceased shortly after 12:30 a.m. Colonel Rick Fuentes broke the news to those gathered in a waiting room the spokesperson said.
Trooper Cullen was a member of the 154th State Police Class. He was stationed at Bellmawr Station and had been a trooper about two years according to the spokesperson.
The investigation into the crash is still ongoing. There have been no charges or tickets against the driver that struck Tpr. Cullen.
