Manhole blast and fire rattled busy Elizabeth Avenue, causing evacuations in several homes and businesses.
The mishap, which happened just before 10:30 a.m. near the 800 block of Elizabeth Avenue, prompted police to close off several blocks between Second Avenue and 5th Street.
As of 2 p.m. the area remains closed as police and officials investigate.
PSE&G is at the scene making repairs.
According to a PSE&G spokesperson, the manhole explosions appear to be the result of power lines corroded by road salt, causing sparks which then subsequently created a buildup of CO2 that turnes into pressure until the manhole explode.
There were no physical injuries were immediately reported.
Update: The Mayor of Elizabeth issued the following statement, "Pertaining to the manhole cover explosion on Elizabeth Avenue, the situation is under control; however power may be out for the next couple of hours in the immediate area between New Point Road and Sixth Street," said the mayor. "The quick response of the Elizabeth Police and Fire Departments assisted greatly in securing the scene and PSE&G remains at the site as work continues for power restoration."
