Police Investigate Armed Robbery of Grocery Store in Newark; Suspects Fire Shots

Police in Newark are on the search for two brazen armed robbery suspects that robbed a store in Newark Monday evening.

Police responded to the 100 block of Norfolk Street for a report of an armed robbery at the Norfolk Grocery store sometime before 9:30 p.m. where cops located several employees in the store who stated that two black male suspects rushed their way into the store armed with guns and demanded cash.

The suspect reportedly took an undetermined amount of cash before they ran from the store according to reports.

While investigating the store robbery, officers were called to the 400 block of South 13th Street a short time later where they were alerted that an unidentified vehicle was found running and abandoned at that location.

After a search of the vehicle's registration, officers noticed that the vehicle was stolen out of East Orange and was involved in several armed robberies, including the Norfolk Grocery robbery.

According to reports, a security officer from the grocery store followed the suspects after they fled from the vehicle.

As the pursuit ensued, the suspects then fired several shots at the guard.

The security officer did not return gunfire or was not injured reports said.

The incident is under investigation.
