33-Year-Old Man Identified as Fatal Shooting Victim in Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating a shooting homicide that occurred late Thursday night in Newark.

Authorities said, shortly before midnight , Newark police officers, who were on routine patrol, heard gunshots in the area of the 600 block of South 10th Street.

As the officers approached this area, they observed an unresponsive male lying on the sidewalk authorities said.

The male, who was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified as Daniel O. Cappell, age 33, of Newark, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit.

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly.
