There is an active investigation underway in Newark's West Ward after a police officer shot a suspect a short time ago. '
The shooting happened in the area of South Orange Avenue and Alexander Street at around 9:45 p.m.
According to preliminary reports, EMS transported a male suspect to University Hospital after the suspect was struck by gunfire to the face by a police officer.
The suspect reportedly pulled a gun and fired a shot at police shortly before police returned gunfire reports said.
The suspect's condition is unknown at this time.
