Jersey City Man Facing Life in Prison, Convicted with Additional Sex Offenses

Jersey City

A 47-year-old Jersey City man facing life in prison for kidnapping and raping a Bayonne woman has been convicted of four counts of sexually assaulting another woman.

Usually a sexual assault carries a possible sentence of five to 10 years in prison, but because of Shawn Barrett's long and violent record, he will possibly face a 10 to 20 years sentence.

Barrett was also facing two counts of simple assault and one count of making terroristic threats.

Barrett was found not guilty on the most serious charges of kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault. He sentencing is scheduled for April 22.

His sentencing for raping the second woman was postponed to an undetermined date.

According to the victim, she was in Barrett's car waiting for a friend thinking he was going to drive around the block but instead he got onto the highway to Jersey City. There he allegedly forced the victim into his home at knife-point and repeatedly raped her while she was blindfolded with a belt, a tie.

The victim allegedly managed to escape when Barrett fell asleep. He was taken into custody after the incident.

On Sept. 28, Barrett was convicted for the Aug. 28, 2013, attack of a 26-year-old Bayonne woman.

He was convicted with criminal restraint and making terroristic threats.

According to Barrett's attorney today's verdict will be appealed.
