Hillside

Firefighters from Hillside, Elizabeth, Cranford, Union, and Irvington teamed up to battle a raging two-alarm blaze that broke out in a two and a half story house located in the 300 block of Winans Avenue early this evening.

Heavy fire ripped through the wood framed structure shortly before 6 p.m. sending firefighters to the scene where they began to extinguish heavy fire that started on the lower levels of the house and quickly spread inside the walls up to the second floor.

It took firefighters a little over an hour to bring the blaze under control.

An older male victim was transported to Beth Israel Hospital in Newark where he suffered non-life threatening burns to the hands according to authorities.

City leaders were on the scene to assist about six residents who occupied the home for nearly 43 years find temporary shelter.
