A recent report of an attempted distraction burglary has police reminding residents to take precautions against distraction burglaries.
Police responded to a home on DeWitt Street Wednesday shortly before 5 p.m., where an 84-year-old woman reported that she was the victim of a burglary.
The woman told officers that a man - described as olive-skinned, late 20’s to early 30’s, 5’8”, medium build, slightly unshaven - came to her door and told her he worked for the water company. Adding that he did had some type of I.D. card hanging around his neck.
The man then went to her kitchen and ran the faucet water for about twenty minutes. He then told her he had to go upstairs and then went to her basement. After a short while, he told her he had to leave and would return the next day to check her meter.
The woman did not see any accomplices and could not find anything missing at this time.
City residents are urged not to let strangers into their house and report anything suspicious to the police department at (908) 474-8500.
