EMS Unit Disarms Gun Wielding Suspect in Jersey City

An overnight crash that involved an ambulance in the city had an EMT engaged in a struggle to recover a weapon from the driver of the vehicle.

The crashed happened at around 12:30 in the area of Caven Point Road at Chapel Street when the driver of a vehicle collided with the ambulance at that location.

According to initial reports at the scene, the driver of the vehicle exited the vehicle and begin to attack the EMT.

The EMT reportedly began to struggle with the suspect (who was heavily intoxicated) when the man pulled a weapon and pointed at the EMT according to reports.

The EMT escalated his attempt to subdue the suspect who would not voluntarily drop the weapon.

The brief struggle continued when the EMT managed to physically forced the man to drop the weapon. During the time EMT was attempting to secure the weapon, the suspect broke free and ran from scene reports said.

The fleeing suspect was described as a medium build hispanic male who was last seen wearing a blue jersey and a white cap.

Police arrived to the scene a short time later where they recovered the weapon that had several spent shell casings in the cylinder authorities said.

The suspect was wanted for an earlier shooting that left a male victim struck in the arm by gunfire on 6th Street.

The victim of the shooting told authorities that a male hispanic exited a vehicle and began to fire several rounds at him before fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed.

The incident is under investigation by Jersey City Police.
