A church congregation in Newark spread some early holiday joy by delivering gifts of turkeys to city residents earlier this afternoon.
Members of the Vailsburg Assembly of God donated over 50 turkeys on Norwood Street in Newark's West Ward.
According to a member at the church, two weeks ago the Lead Pastor Jermel Mayo shared with members that God delivered him a vision.
Since the church building is located in this neighborhood, it was imperative to outreach the community with gifts for Thanksgiving. The pastor explained to the congregation, "The people are real, with real needs".
Mayo informed members that he envisioned the church walking the stretch of Norwood Street, giving turkeys to each household on the block.
"He reminded us of our obligation as a congregation to serve the members of the community" the member said.
Shortly before this morning's worship service, several members recalled Pastor Mayo's conversation by entering the church with more than just their bibles; they walked in with dozens of turkeys in arm. "Our Gifts of Grace Ministry received the turkeys and tied a message to each one of them" the member said. "The message simply read, “God loves you and so do we. Your family at Vailsburg Assembly of God #Gifts of Grace" the member continued.
Each member received a turkey along with an address where the turkey should be delivered.
At the end of a short worship service, members began to make their way down Norwood Street where they rang doorbells and randomly handed over turkeys to surprised residents.
"As we prayed before going out in the community, we were reminded that this is to glorify God and to address the needs of the people in the community. So, that's what we did" the member concluded.
On behalf of the Vailsburg Assembly of God, the church wants to wish the New Jersey residents a happy and safe day of thanks this coming Thursday.
