Bomb Threat by Boy, 9, Prompts Evacuation of Jersey City School

Jersey City

A 9-year-old student’s false threat – claiming to be in possession of a bomb - led to school-wide evacuation Wednesday in Jersey City.

Police and the bomb squad responded to P.S. 34, after the 9-year-old boy, allegedly told an educator that he had a bomb in his bag, sometime after 2 p.m.

The school was deemed safe shortly after no bomb was found by authorities.

According to Chief of Staff Maryann Dickar, the child appears to have been angry about something that had happened in his class but claims child immediately said 'oh, I was just kidding, I was mad,’ but school officials followed through on protocol.

According to police, although no charges were filed against the boy, who appeared remorseful of what transpired, he was suspended. He was also brought back to the juvenile bureau for additional questioning and to speak with the child’s mother.
