The North Brunswick Police and Fire Departments were alerted to a possible fire at 114 Willowbrook Drive this morning, at approximately 8:13 a.m.
Upon arrival, police confirmed that multiple units were on fire within building 19.
An officer at the scene, spotted an adult female and a child on a balcony calling for help. The officer instructed the woman to drop the baby to him and then jump to him as well.
After safely catching both, they were transported to an area hospital as a precaution.
Officers then continued to ensure that the building was evacuated.
Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours, keeping the fire damage to building 19.
Two firefighters were treated at the scene after suffering minor injuries from falling roof debris.
No other injuries were reported.
Mutual aid responded to the scene from the New Brunswick, Milltown, Brookview (East Brunswick), and Franklin Park Fire Departments, as well as the Milltown First Aid Squad.
The building sustained heavy damage, and all eight units within the structure are uninhabitable.
Several crews remain on the scene, conducting overhaul operations.
The incident is being investigated by the North Brunswick Fire Marshal's Office, assisted by North Brunswick Police Detectives.
