An investigation is underway into a shooting in Newark that had a police officer fire his weapon and injure one person overnight.
Reports of shots fired that happened on Washington Street and Court Street shortly before 1 a.m. sent several police units to the scene where they found one person struck by gunfire at that location.
The male victim was transported to University Hospital where he suffered critical injuries after being struck in the chest by gunfire.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a police officer reportedly walked in on an armed robbery in progress at the Sunoco Convenience store that eventually resulted in gunfire according to a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. The officer was transported to the hospital by protocol and was not struck by gunfire.
The officer was on-duty for Newark.
The investigations being handled by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office at this time.
