An investigation is underway into an armed robbery that took place at a Family Dollar Store in the city's downtown late last night.
The incident happened at around 8 p.m. in the 100 block of Market Street where police and detectives rushed to the store for several calls of a robbery in progress.
According to reports, a male suspect entered the store armed with a weapon and reportedly demanded cash from the cashier.
The suspects (who was only reported to be a black male) took an undetermined amount of cash before fleeing the store in an unknown direction.
According to company officials, a clear description of the suspect was captured on the store's surveillance camera.
According to a company spokesperson, all stores in the tri-state area have updated security systems to protect employees and customers in rare cases like last night in Newark.
"While I am unable to go into specifics, please know that we strive to create a safe work and shopping environment by tailoring our store operations and security for each store. We are continually enhancing our on-premise security and surveillance systems, and our employee training, to reduce the incidence of robberies in our stores" a company spokesperson said.
There were no injuries reported or arrests made.
