Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced today that three men have been indicted by a grand jury in Middlesex County on charges of fatally shooting a New Brunswick man and wounding two others.
Rolando Martinez Sanchez, 24, Manuel Mendez, 23, and Renee Herrera, 30, all of New Brunswick, were indicted on October 27, 2015 with the murder of Gregorio Hernandez, 28.
The defendants also were charged in the 23-count indictment with aggravated manslaughter, manslaughter, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of a firearm for unlawful purposes.
In addition, Sanchez and Mendez were charged with hindering their apprehension, witness tampering, and obstruction of the administration of law.
The charges were handed up in New Brunswick following a presentation to the grand jury by Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Brian Shevlin.
Sanchez remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail set when he was charged on December 18, 2014. Bail also was set at $1 million for Herrera, who was arrested on October 28, 2015 in Edison. Mendez is being held on $750,000 bail after he surrendered to police on October 28, 2015.
Sanchez was charged after the investigation determined that he had opened fire on a group of men on Hale Street in New Brunswick on May 18, 2014, and struck Mr. Hernandez, who was not one of the intended targets.
He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead at 1:08 a.m.
Two other men, who were sitting with Mr. Hernandez on the porch of a home on Hale Street,were wounded during the shooting. One man was treated and released from the hospital. The other man suffered a wound to his finger, but declined treatment.
The investigation is continuing.
