Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced today that an Old Bridge man has pleaded guilty to a charge of fatally beating his mother.
Jamaar Best-Figueroa, 27, of Old Bridge pleaded guilty on October 23, 2015 to a count of aggravated manslaughter in the death on August 22, 2013 of Shauna Figueroa, 52.
Under a plea agreement reached with Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Julie Davidson, the defendant will be sentenced to serve up to 18 years in a New Jersey state prison with no chance of parole until he completes 85 percent of the term.
The defendant is scheduled to be sentenced in New Brunswick on December 14, 2015 by Superior Court Judge Michael A. Toto.
Best-Figueroa initially was arrested and charged with assaulting his mother, who was attacked in their home in Old Bridge on May 30, 2013.
Following the assault, the mother was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, and later was transferred to hospice care. She died at a hospice in Long Branch on Aug. 22, 2013 from medical complications caused by injuries sustained in the assault.
The defendant was charged following an investigation by Sgt. Richard Higgins of the Old Bridge Police Department.
