Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable announced today that the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide / Major Crimes Task Force are investigating a homicide.
The victim has been identified as Darnell D. Smith, 19, of Newark. According to authorities, at approximately 1:25 am today Newark Police responded to a report of shots fired in the 200 block of South 6th St.
When they arrived on the scene they discovered Smith outside suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:50 am.

Authorities said, the investigation is active and ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
