An early morning stabbing that happened inside a convenience store in the city's North Ward has police investigating.
Police responded to the attack that occurred on Montclair Ave. and Bellair Place. at around 7 a.m. on reports of a person suffering serious injuries after being stabbed multiple times.
According to store officials, shortly after 7 a.m. a man frantically ran into the store as if he was being pursued by another individual.
The man sought immediate cover behind the deli counter.
About a minute later, a second male charged into the store, where he made his way behind the deli counter initiating a violent struggle with the man.
During the assault, the suspect picked up a knife and began to stab the victim while ordering him to hand over a cell phone and other personal possessions according to store officials.
"The victim was trying to give the man the items but he just continued stabbing him. I got so afraid and ran from the store to call police" the store official said.
Police arrived to the scene a short time after the incident to begin a search of the area.
Officers searching the 300 block of Montclair Ave. located and apprehended the suspect. The victim was transported to the hospital in an unknown condition.
"It took me about 30 minutes to clean up so much blood" the store official said.
Newark Police are handling the investigation.
