Jersey City Man Convicted of Kidnap, Rape

A Jersey City man is facing life in prison after being convicted this afternoon of kidnapping and raping a Bayonne woman in in 2013.

After four days of deliberation during his second trial, Shawn Barrett, 47, was convicted of kidnaping, rape, criminal restraint and making terroristic threats.

Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Najma Rana said will seek life in prison without parole for Barrett as a result of his history of violence.

After jury’s decision this afternoon, Barrett’s bail was revoked and is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 11.

According to document, Barrett who worked in the county mail room, pretended to be a supervisor in order to influence the victim to go to his home. Once the victim entered Barrett’s apartment, he hit her and forced her into his bedroom while in possession of a knife.

The woman then claimed being tied down and raped repetitively. She did admit stabbing Barrett, who was aslepp, with a knife before fleeing.
