City of Burlington Police officers this morning observed what appeared to be a grenade at the Wilbur Watts Intermediate School playground, immediately securing the area.
At approximately 7:58 a.m., two uniformed City of Burlington Police officers were in the area of Wilbur Watts Intermediate School while students were arriving to class. During that time, officers were speaking to a parent about an unrelated concern and started to check the property of the school.
As officers walked into the playground area, they observed a suspicious item that looked like a hand grenade. Officers immediately requested assistance and emergency plans were placed into effect with the City of Burlington School District.
Information regarding street closures and the evacuation of students was released. A hotline was also established while working closely with the school district.
At approximately 9:34 a.m, the area was deemed safe by the New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad.
The item found appeared to be a replica hand grenade.
No injuries were reported during this incident.
An investigation is being conducted surrounding the circumstances of this incident.
