Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the Honorable Martin G. Cronin, Judge of the Superior Court, sentenced Jahmir Cain, 23, and his co-defendant Tarell Thomas, 27, both of Newark to ten years and seven years, respectively, for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl.
The girl met Cain on Facebook in September of 2013.
Both men pled guilty to aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, according to Assistant Prosecutor Kathleen Lyons-Boswick, who handled the case.
Today, Cain was sentenced to 10 years. Thomas was sentenced to seven years in New Jersey State Prison. Under the No Early Release Act, they must serve 85 percent of their sentence before they become eligible for parole.
They must register under Megan’s Law, will be under Parole Supervision for Life and must stay away from the victim when they are released from custody.
As an adult Cain had four prior arrests and two disorderly person’s convictions. Before coming to Newark, Cain lived in Glassboro. Thomas had six adult arrests.
“This case illustrates precisely why these laws were enacted --- to protect children from the predatory behavior engaged in by these defendants,’’ said Assistant Prosecutor Lyons-Boswick.
