Newark Man Indicted on Murder Charges

Newark New Jersey

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that an Essex County Grand Jury has returned an indictment charging Sadot Council, 29, of Newark with the murder of Anthony Mayse, 32, also of Newark.

Mayse was fatally shot on April 28 at approximately 12:45 p.m. It is alleged that Council retrieved a handgun and fatally shot Mayse in the middle of the Stephen Crane Housing Complex following a fistfight between the two which had been broken up by bystanders minutes earlier.

According to Assistant Prosecutor Adam Wells, who is handling the case, Council has been indicted on one count of 1st degree murder, one count of 2nd degree unlawful possession of a handgun, and one count of 2nd degree possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose.

Council is currently being held on a million dollars bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned before the Honorable Ronald Wigler, Presiding Criminal Division Judge, on Sept. 15.

These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
