Family: Boy Awaiting to Donate Organs After Being Declared Brain Dead Shows Signs of Life

The 13-year-old boy pronounced brain dead Sunday after a crash on Route 80 was being kept on life support until organs could be donated but according to family the boy has since shown signs of life.

While at St. Joseph's Medical Center Monday, Michael Lavecchia III's mother,  Laureen Lavecchia, stayed with him through the night while doctors looked for someone to receive his organs. Monday the mother along side the child's grandfather witnessed movement in Michael's leg, shoulder and head, according to family. 

The family who already had a death certificate in hand, destroyed it and are awaiting for neurologist to assess him.

The family is currently awaiting in hope to move Mikey to Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, New York.

Over the weekend, Michael LaVecchia Jr., 37, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., was driving a Honda CR-V sport utility vehicle when for an unknown reason left the road striking the back of a dump truck that was parked on the shoulder of Route 80 eastbound. The driver, LaVecchia (elder) and a passenger, later identified as Giovanni LaBoy, 14, of Centereach, N.Y., died Saturday. The third passenger, Michael LaVecchia III, 13, was transported to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson where was declared brain dead just before noon Sunday.
