Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that Al-Muqqadin Means, 20, of East Orange was sentenced today to 24 years in prison for the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend, 17-year-old Aquilla Flood.
On June 9, Means pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the fatal shooting. Under a plea deal, prosecutors suggested a 24-year prison sentence for Means.
Today, after Means was sentenced, the judge added that he must serve slightly more than 20 years before becoming eligible for parole but he will receive credit for a little over two years of time served.
On June 5, 2013, Flood was found dead from a single gunshot wound to the head inside her home. Flood was voted prom queen by her classmates and was scheduled to receive her crown just days before she was killed.
About a month before the murder, Flood broke up with Means. In the weeks leading up to the prom he began to threaten her after she refused to go to the prom with him.
