A vehicle taken from Chestnut Street with a baby inside had police take action shortly before 1 p.m.
Police responded to reports of a stolen vehicle on Chestnut Street this afternoon where a 35-year-old city man reported that his daughter was inside the vehicle.
Several officers closed down the area and began an immediate search for the vehicle.
The baby was reportedly taken out of the vehicle and left in a car seat at Salvation Army on East Grand Street.
Police caught up with the suspect, later identified as Andre McKainion of Newark, in the backyard of a home on the 400 block of Linden Street.
McKainion was charged with first-degree carjacking, a second-degree count of eluding an officer and a third-degree count of theft.
No injuries were reported.
