There is little information known at this time on a early morning police involved shooting that happened in the area of Central Ave. and South 8th Street.
Gunfire erupted in the area shortly before 2 a.m. sending a large police response to the scene where a crime scene was established and an immediate investigation began.
Residents in the area said they were awaken to a loud pop or what sounded like a backfire from a car then immediately followed by police sirens.
A spokesperson for The Essex County Prosecutor's Office responded by saying that there is an investigation into a police involved shooting by a Newark Police officer who fired his weapon at a suspect during that time frame. The spokesperson said that it appears at this point that no one was struck by gunfire. The spokesperson would not immediately release if the officer was on-duty at this time.
There were several police reports of carjackings around the city but the spokesperson could not confirm that this was the case in this incident.
The spokesperson would only say that the investigation is on-going and there is no other information available.
"If any information is available, it would be released later this morning", the spokesperson said.
