Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo and Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson reported a Camden man has been convicted for a 2012 kidnapping and robbery in the city.
A jury on Thursday found 39-year-old Michael Winters guilty of kidnapping, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
The victim, a then-32-year-old Camden woman, was waiting for a bus at the corner of Broadway and Chestnut Street when Winters and a codefendant, Matilda Marshall, 31, of Camden, approached and pushed her into a vehicle shortly before 6:20 a.m. on November 15, 2012.
The defendants drove to a nearby underpass and demanded the victim’s cell phone, loose change and her Families First card. They then drove to the Gulf gas station at the corner of Mt. Ephraim and Kaighn avenues, where Marshall attempted to use the card to get money out of an ATM. The victim was able to flee the vehicle and call police after both defendants went inside the gas station.
Winters and Marshall were both arrested in Camden on November 16, 2012.
Marshall pleaded guilty in January 2014 to one count of receiving stolen property. She was sentenced in March 2014 to four years in state prison.
Winters faces 15 years to life in state prison due to his status as a persistent offender. He is scheduled to be sentenced on August 7 before Superior Court Judge Samuel D. Natal.
