An investigation is underway in Paterson following a violent attack on two emergency medical technicians (EMTs) from the Paterson Fire Department (PFD) while they were responding to a medical call.
Authorities announced that a suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
The assault occurred in the early morning hours of March 2, 2025, when Paterson Police officers were dispatched to 169 16th Avenue at approximately 5:25 a.m. after receiving reports of an aggravated assault.
Upon arrival, officers learned that the victims—two PFD EMTs—had been attacked while attempting to provide medical assistance.
According to initial reports, the EMTs had arrived at the location less than an hour earlier to assist a man experiencing breathing difficulties.
After securing the patient to a gurney, he suddenly requested to be taken off. The first responders complied, removing him from the stretcher before leaving the building.
However, moments later, the suspect allegedly turned violent, launching an unprovoked attack.
One EMT was reportedly punched multiple times, while the other was kneed repeatedly before the suspect fled the scene.
Both victims sustained minor injuries and were transported to St. Joseph’s Medical Center for treatment.
In response to the incident, Officer in Charge Patrick Murray condemned the attack, emphasizing the importance of protecting first responders.
“Any attack on a public official performing their duty is unacceptable. These two firefighters took an oath to help those in need, and they were violently assaulted for doing their job. I commend our detectives for their dedication in swiftly identifying and apprehending the suspect.”
Following an investigation led by the Paterson Police Major Crimes Unit, authorities arrested 25-year-old Darian Jackson, Jr. of Paterson on March 5, 2025.

He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree crime that carries potential penalties of three to five years in prison and fines of up to $15,000.
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
