Middlesex County officials announced that the County's Magnet Schools have been awarded $375,000 as part of a grant for Expanding Career Pathways in Artificial Intelligence.

The program develops comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) education pathways in county vocational schools, positioning the state as a leader in preparing students for the rapidly evolving AI-focused technological workforce, according to Middlesex County officials.

MCPO authorities say the "Expanding Career Pathways in Artificial Intelligence" initiative aims to create state-of-the-art AI and robotics curriculum in partnership with higher education institutions and industry specialists.

Middlesex County Magnet Schools, in collaboration with Kean University, will spearhead this transformative project, Middlesex County officials said.

“Our new AI and Robotics program isn't just about teaching students to apply technology—it's about empowering the next generation of innovators to create technologies we haven't even thought about. Along with our partner, Kean University, we're giving students the tools to shape the future, not just learn about it,” said Superintendent Jorge E. Diaz.

“With Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the rise, it is critical to understand the potential short- and long-term impact on education and our County at large, " said Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios.

“The Middlesex County Magnet Schools are leading the way in first-rate public education,” said Middlesex County Commissioner and Chair of Economic Development Chanelle Scott-McCullum.

“We are committed to ensuring students have the knowledge and skills needed to lead in emerging fields," said Kean University President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D.

According to Middlesex county authorities, the program features three sequential courses integrating technical skills, ethical considerations, and practical applications, culminating in industry certifications and college credits through Kean University.

A key focus is increasing participation among underrepresented groups in technology fields and addressing the urgent need for comprehensive AI education at the secondary level, particularly within New Jersey’s Career and Technical Education programs, MCPO officials say.

Middlesex County officials stated that the program will begin in September 2025, with curriculum development and teacher training commencing immediately.

The initiative is supported by the Office of Career Readiness at the New Jersey Department of Education and includes partnerships with industry experts, ensuring alignment with current workforce needs, MCPO officials said.
