Law enforcement officials are renewing efforts to solve the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old in Newark, offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.  Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Sheriff Amir Jones announced the Crime Stoppers Program reward as investigators continue searching for leads in the tragic 2022 case.

The shooting occurred on June 8, 2022, around 11:14 p.m., when police responded to reports of gunfire near 146 Goodwin Avenue. Officers arrived to find Nyasia Peppers, 18, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Despite being rushed to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, she did not survive.

Authorities have determined that Peppers was not the intended target of the shooting. The suspects, who fled the scene in a stolen blue Toyota C-HR, later abandoned the vehicle near Millington Avenue.

Surveillance footage captured two individuals exiting the Toyota and getting into what appeared to be a black Honda Accord before escaping the area.

Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office tips line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC (1-877-847-7432).

All information will remain confidential.
