According to information released early this morning by the Belleville Police Department, they are investigating a serious motor vehicle accident that occurred around 9:15 p.m. last night.
Authorities received multiple 911 calls reporting a crash on Route 21 North near mile marker 7.4, with witnesses stating that one of the vehicles had broken through the guardrail and plunged into the Passaic River.
Upon arrival, however, officers determined that the vehicle had not become submerged in the river as initially reported.

An investigation revealed that the accident involved two vehicles, with a 2005 Honda Accord crashing through the guardrail as a result of the collision.
The driver, a 41-year-old man from Paterson, NJ, was temporarily trapped inside the car. Emergency responders from the Belleville Fire Department were called to the scene, and the driver was transported to University Hospital in Newark with non-life-threatening injuries.
The second driver involved in the crash did not sustain any injuries and declined medical treatment.
Belleville police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
