Elena Currie, 64, of Hackensack, NJ, was taken into custody on February 13, 2025, in Paramus and charged with second-degree theft.

Authorities say that between July 2021 and November 2023, Currie carried out 398 unauthorized Zelle transfers from her employer’s business account to her personal account, siphoning off hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit launched an investigation in April 2024 after receiving a report of suspected financial misconduct.

The investigation uncovered a pattern of unauthorized transactions over a two-year period, leading to Currie’s arrest.

Following her arrest, Currie was released pending her first court appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.

Prosecutor Musella emphasized that the charge is merely an accusation and that Currie remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
