The Morris County Board of County Commissioners has officially designated February 2025 as Black History Month, encouraging residents to honor the achievements and lasting influence of African Americans both in the county and across the nation. “We take great pride in recognizing the invaluable contributions of African Americans throughout history and in our community,” said Commissioner Director Tayfun Selen.
“Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, innovation, and rich cultural heritage of the Black community that has helped shape our country.”
The national observance of Black History Month traces its origins to Negro History Week, established in 1926 by historian, author, and educator Dr. Carter G. Woodson.
Known as the “Father of Black History,” Dr. Woodson emphasized the importance of educating all children about African American history.
He famously remarked, “Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.”
The commissioners encourage residents to take this month as an opportunity to reflect on the vital contributions of African Americans to daily life, both locally and globally.
Looking ahead, planning is underway for Morris County’s fifth annual Juneteenth reception, set to take place on June 19 at the Morris County Administration and Records Building in Morristown.
The event will feature Art in the Atrium’s (ATA) 33rd annual exhibition of African American fine art, a tradition that has spanned more than three decades.
ATA’s artwork is displayed on the second through fifth floors of the building and continues to celebrate the creativity and expression of African American artists.
This year’s exhibit is scheduled to open on Friday, May 16, and will remain on display until September 19. In addition, ATA is currently showcasing its "Black Joy" exhibit at the Morristown Performing Arts Center’s gallery, which will run through March 2. More details about the exhibit can be found at mayoarts.org.
