According to a statement released by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, applications are now open for the Bergen County Youth Police Academy – Class #19, a two-week initiative aimed at educating and inspiring high school students about careers in public service.

The academy is open to young men and women entering grades 9 through 12 and is completely free of charge.

The program, funded through forfeited proceeds from criminal enterprises, will take place from July 7 through July 18, 2025.

The academy’s core values—honor, respect, and commitment—are central to its mission of exposing cadets to the inner workings of law enforcement, the judiciary, emergency services, and county government.

Beyond professional training, the program encourages personal growth by reinforcing teamwork, discipline, and leadership skills.

“Youth Academy is a unique opportunity for young people to focus on strengthening their life skills, including self-respect, respect for others, teamwork, and commitment to one’s goals,” said Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.

“Staffed by professionals from both the Prosecutor’s Office and Sheriff’s Office, the academy gives high school students a real understanding of what it’s like to train as a police cadet.”

The program features a mix of interactive educational activities and physical training. Participants will take part in presentations from law enforcement officials, engage with local, state, and federal agencies, and go on field trips designed to give them first-hand exposure to different aspects of law enforcement and public safety.

“Through hands-on experiences and educational sessions, participants gain insight into the importance of community relations, government operations, and interagency collaboration,” said Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton.

“The program also emphasizes leadership development, equipping students with essential skills to become responsible and engaged members of their communities.”

Applications can be obtained at local high schools, police departments, or online at www.BCPO.net/youthacademy.
