Male Shot in His Head Marks Newark's Second Homicide in Under a Week

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating Newark’s second homicide of 2025, which occurred just seven days into the new year.SupportPolice responded to reports of gunfire near 397 Fairmount Avenue, close to CityPlex Theater in the city’s Central Ward, shortly before 6:25 p.m. Tuesday. 

Upon arrival, officers discovered an unidentified male with a gunshot wound to the head. Despite efforts by emergency responders, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect fled the area immediately after the incident, and as of Wednesday morning, no arrests had been made.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances and motive behind the fatal shooting.

This marks the second homicide in Newark within a week, and over a half dozen shots fired incidents stressing a violent start to the new year in the city.Support
