The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating Newark’s first homicide of 2025, following a fatal shooting in the city’s South Ward on Saturday night.
Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert around 9:15 p.m. near 152 Seymour Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers discovered an unidentified male lying on the ground, suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
In connection with the shooting, officers pursued and apprehended a suspect on foot. A weapon believed to be linked to the incident was confiscated.
This fatal shooting marks the city’s first homicide of the year, occurring after more than half a dozen shootings took place since the start of 2025, many of which happened over the weekend.
The investigation remains active, with authorities working to determine the motive behind the shooting.
No additional injuries were reported.
