Authorities have charged a 26-year-old Irvington woman in connection with the fatal shooting of a Newark resident and an exchange of gunfire with police during his arrest.
The announcement was made by Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Emmanuel Miranda.
The suspect, A-Jahada Amirah Bostwick, has been charged with the murder of 38-year-old Tyron Whitley, who was fatally shot on North 9th Street in Newark on December 17.
Officers patrolling the area heard gunfire and quickly responded to the scene.
As officers attempted to apprehend Bostwick, officials said gunfire was exchanged between him and law enforcement.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the confrontation.
Bostwick faces charges of first-degree murder for Whitley's death, first-degree attempted murder of a Newark police officer, and second-degree weapons offenses.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released additional details about the incident.
