Police in Newark’s West Ward responded to a fatal shooting in the Vailsburg section on Thursday evening, where a man was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The incident occurred on the single-digit block of Alexander Street at approximately 8:25 p.m.
Officers were dispatched after reports of gunfire in the area.
Upon arrival, they discovered the victim lying on the ground and immediately secured the scene with police tape. Tragically, the man was pronounced dead at the location.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified and is actively investigating the case alongside Newark police.
The suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Authorities have not reported any additional injuries related to the incident.
Residents are urged to avoid the area as the investigation continues. Police have not yet released the victim's identity or any potential motive for the shooting.
