According to information released by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), officers at Newark Liberty International Airport intercepted a loaded handgun at a security checkpoint on Wednesday, December 18.
This marks the 20th firearm detected at the airport this year, tying the record for the most guns confiscated in a single year.
The weapon, a .380 caliber handgun loaded with six bullets, was discovered in the carry-on bag of a Bensalem, Pennsylvania man. TSA officers also found two additional magazines containing 12 bullets.
Port Authority Police promptly arrested the individual.
TSA emphasized the seriousness of attempting to bring a weapon through security checkpoints.
Federal penalties for such violations can reach up to $15,000, depending on the circumstances.
These penalties apply to all travelers, regardless of whether they have a concealed carry permit, as firearms are strictly prohibited on airplanes.
This incident underscores TSA’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of air travel by preventing dangerous items from being brought onto aircraft.
