The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a heartbreaking accident that claimed the life of a well-known and respected Newark Traffic Control Officer late Wednesday night in the city’s downtown district.
The collision occurred just before midnight near the Prudential Center at the intersection of Broad Street and Lafayette Street.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, where they found Traffic Control Officer Jairo Rodriguez gravely injured after being struck by a vehicle.
Despite the efforts of EMS, Rodriguez succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Rodriguez was a beloved figure in the downtown area, known for his stern dedication to his post and his warm, personable demeanor.
“TCO Rodriguez was highly respected and beloved by all who worked with him,” Director Miranda said.
“He joined the Newark Department of Public Safety in 2022 and, due to his consistent demeanor of kindness, warmth, and sincerity, he was immediately embraced as a dear Brother in Blue. As TCO, he faithfully directed traffic and monitored the City’s bus lanes and parking meters. Before joining us, he worked at Prudential Arena, where his reputation for impeccable service remains legendary. We deeply mourn this incredible loss and pray for the comfort and strength of his wife and two daughters,” Director Miranda said.
His death has left a deep void in the Newark community. A family member shared a poignant tribute on social media:
“Last night, while doing what he always does, making sure everyone in attendance gets out safe, and keeping the traffic moving, he was struck by a motor vehicle, and sadly, died as a result of his injuries. Jairo loved his job, and everyone he worked with. He’d give you the shirt off his back.”
Sources close to the investigation have identified the driver involved in the accident as Newark Police Sergeant Victor Ortiz, who was reportedly driving his personal vehicle.
Ortiz reportedly remained at the scene following the collision, but authorities have not yet disclosed where he was coming from or heading at the time of the incident.
The tragedy took place on the same evening as the Newark Police Union annual holiday party, held at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark.
According to the organization’s social media posts, the event was attended by members of the Fraternal Order of Police Union, along with several superior officers. Officials have not confirmed if Sergeant Ortiz attended.
As the investigation continues, the city is left grappling with the loss of a man who dedicated his life to ensuring the safety of others.
Jairo Rodriguez’s commitment to his Brick City community and his kindhearted nature will not be forgotten.
