Newark authorities are investigating a Sunday morning shots-fired incident in the Central Ward that triggered a series of events, including a vehicle collision and a utility emergency.The incident began around 1:50 a.m. when a ShotSpotter device alerted police to gunfire near Morris Avenue and 15th Avenue.
Responding officers found two vehicles involved in a collision at the scene, as well as an individual with a head injury. However, the injury was not related to the shooting, according to responders.
Shell casings were recovered at the scene, and witnesses reported seeing a black male wearing dark clothing fleeing the area on foot.
The collision caused additional concerns after a utility pole and wires came down, creating a hazardous situation. Police contacted PSE&G for assistance in securing the area and addressing the damage.
No injuries from the shooting were reported, and no arrests have been made.
The incident remains under active investigation as authorities work to determine the sequence of events and identify those involved.
