Authorities in Essex County are investigating a severe crash that claimed multiple lives in Newark’s East Ward early Saturday morning. Preliminary information from the scene indicated that emergency responders were alerted to a vehicle fire near the Blanchard Street side of Raymond Boulevard just before midnight.
Upon arrival, firefighters and police found a car fully engulfed in flames.
After extinguishing the blaze and gaining entry, they discovered approximately six individuals inside, all suffering from catastrophic burn injuries.
Tragically, each was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial findings suggest the vehicle had been traveling on a Pulaski Skyway extension when the driver apparently lost control and went airborne causing the car to plunge several feet off a portion of the bridge.
The impact and subsequent fire created a scene of unimaginable devastation.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is now assisting in the investigation as officials work to determine the circumstances leading up to this horrific incident.Further details, including the identities of the victims and the exact cause of the crash, remain under review.
