Police in Newark and Irvington are investigating a shots-fired incident that occurred near the border of the two Essex County towns Sunday around 2:10 a.m.
Newark officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area of Hawthorne Avenue and South 20th Street, which lies on the boundary between the two municipalities.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered shell casings at the scene but found no victims during their search.
Detectives determined that the shell casings were located on the Irvington Township side of the crime scene.
A check of local hospitals revealed no walk-in gunshot victims, and no injuries have been reported.
The suspect fled the scene, and the motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Newark or Irvington Police Departments.
The investigation is ongoing.
