A nationwide recall of whole fresh American cucumbers has been announced by SunFed Produce, LLC (SunFed) due to potential contamination with Salmonella.
The recall, based on findings by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), involves cucumbers sold between October 12 and November 26, 2024.
FDA officials said the affected cucumbers were distributed across numerous states, including New Jersey, California, Texas, and Florida, as well as parts of Canada.
Health Risks from Salmonella Salmonella contamination poses significant health risks, particularly to young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Common symptoms include fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream, leading to conditions such as arterial infections, endocarditis, or arthritis. Symptoms typically develop within 6 to 72 hours of exposure and may last for up to a week.
Details of the Recall The recall was initiated after the FDA identified a connection between the cucumbers and several cases of salmonellosis reported between October 12 and November 15, 2024. The affected cucumbers were sold in various packaging types, including bulk cardboard containers labeled with the "SunFed" brand or in plain white boxes and black plastic crates marked with the grower’s name, "Agrotato, S.A. de C.V."
SunFed has notified its direct buyers and assured the public that no other products or farms associated with the company are involved in this recall.
Consumer Guidance Consumers who purchased cucumbers during the specified time frame are advised to discard them immediately and monitor for symptoms of Salmonella infection. Those experiencing symptoms should contact their healthcare provider.
