A suspect who fired at police officers during a pursuit on Chancellor Avenue this afternoon has been apprehended with the help of multiple law enforcement agencies, according to Irvington Police Director Bowers.

The incident began near 673 Chancellor Avenue when Irvington officers encountered 48-year-old Kelvin Sanders, who was armed with a firearm.

As officers pursued him, Sanders allegedly fired a shot in their direction before fleeing the scene.

After an extensive search involving Irvington police, Newark police, the New Jersey State Police, and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office,

Sanders was located and taken into custody. He now faces charges of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.

Sanders was transported to the Essex County Detention Center, where he awaits arraignment.

Mayor Tony Vauss praised the efforts of law enforcement following the arrest, emphasizing the bravery of the officers involved and the importance of collaboration among agencies.

“Today’s events serve as a reminder of the daily risks our officers face in the line of duty,” Mayor Vauss said.

“Under the leadership of Public Safety Director Tracy Bowers, our police department demonstrated exceptional professionalism and courage in ensuring the safety of our community. We are grateful to all participating agencies for their swift response and dedication to maintaining peace in our neighborhoods.”

“As I reflect on today’s events, I am reminded of the words of former President Ronald Reagan, who said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.” Our law enforcement officers embody this spirit daily, putting their lives on the line to protect our freedoms and ensure our safety, Mayor Vauss said.

Irvington Police Director Bowers echoed the mayor’s sentiments, commending the officers’ teamwork and commitment. “All officers and participating agencies did a great job assisting in apprehending this suspect. I commend them for their bravery, courage, and effort in keeping our community safe,” he said.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation, which remains ongoing.
