A high-speed chase occurred on Friday afternoon as several suspects led police on a pursuit through Newark’s South Ward, into Irvington, and back into Newark before abandoning the vehicle.
The chase began when Newark police attempted to pull over a dark-colored Mercedes-Benz suspected in multiple armed robberies across the city.
The driver ignored police lights and sirens, speeding through several Newark neighborhoods.
Police called for assistance from Irvington Township officers when the vehicle exited Newark near South 20th Street.
The car was later spotted in Newark’s Central Ward before stopping near 69 Kent Street, where several suspects bailed from the vehicle.
Police detained one individual, but two others managed to flee the scene on foot. No injuries were reported.
Witnesses reported multiple robberies throughout Newark by suspects from the vehicle, which bore the license plate “XMZ-P43.”
The investigation remains active as authorities continue to search for the remaining suspects.
