UPDATE: This is now a fatal pedestrian strike.
Edison Police are investigating a severe pedestrian accident early Monday morning near a Dunkin Donuts on Route 1.
Police have all northbound lanes closed at Plainfield Avenue that should last close to the morning rush.
The incident took place around 4 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Ellen Street after multiple 911 calls reported a person struck by a vehicle in the area.
Upon arrival, officers found an unidentified individual with severe injuries.
Emergency medical responders reported grave injuries as of 4:40 a.m.
Authorities have not released further details, and the investigation remains in its early stages as police work to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
