The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning, November 3, in the Westmont section of Haddon Township.The incident left one man dead after an encounter with police.
According to preliminary findings, Haddon Township Police responded around 1:07 a.m. to a 9-1-1 call reporting an attempted burglary in progress at an apartment complex on West Crystal Lake Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers encountered a man armed with a knife in the building’s stairwell. During the confrontation, an officer fired his service weapon, striking the man.
Officers administered first aid on the scene before emergency personnel arrived. The man was then transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead approximately an hour later.
Authorities recovered a knife at the scene.
In compliance with a 2019 New Jersey law, the Attorney General’s Office is required to investigate any death that occurs during an interaction with law enforcement or while a person is in custody.
The identities of the deceased man and the officer involved have not been released as the investigation continues.
